Eligibility for personal firearms license

09/05/2024 א' אייר תשפ"ד

Important news for the residents of the city of Modi'in Maccabim Reut – residents of certain streets in the city will be eligible to receive a personal weapon license in an expedited procedure according to the conditions of the Israel Police.

The Ministry of National Security and the Israel Police approved the request of Mayor Haim Bibas to recognize dozens of streets in the city as belonging to an "eligible settlement" which would allow residents to be eligible for a personal firearms license.

According to the conditions of the Israel Police, the right to receive a firearms license in an expedited procedure will be granted to all Maccabim residents due to their proximity to the perimeter fence and to thousands of residents who live in dozens of other streets that surround the city, including streets located near Highway 443 and near Route 3, through Sderot Menachem Begin and Sderot Yair Parag until the intersection with Route 443 at the Maccabim Reut junction.

Residents living in those approved streets will be able to apply for a gun license. As we know, since many residents of the city are veterans of combat units, they will have an advantage to obtain the license.

This request was approved following the mayor's appeal to the Ministry of National Security and the Security and Licensing Division of the Israel Police following the events October 7th and the urgency created by the security situation. We would like to emphasize that the Israel Police has accepted the recommendation so far for only some of the streets that were submitted for approval, and the municipality will continue to work with them to obtain approvals for additional streets in the city.

We remind you that in light of the weapon reform for arming the citizens of Israel, the Ministry of National Security led by Minister Ben Gvir has distributed over 122,000 firearms to citizens who were eligible.

Mayor Haim Bibas: "I am happy that the Israel Police decided to recognize large parts of the city as an area eligible for residents to receive a firearms license. This is undoubtedly another important layer in maintaining the security of the city and personal security, in these tense days. This approval joins the strengthening and deepening of the security circles that we have carried out since the beginning of the war, by recruiting and training many resident volunteers, by carrying out patrols and by the alert and vigilant activity of the municipal security department. I will continue to work with the Ministry of National Security and with the Israel Police to obtain recognition for additional areas of the city."

Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir: "The city of Modi'in Maccabim Reut today joins the massive weapons reform that I led in the Ministry of National Security, and many (residents of) streets in the city will be entitled to personal weapons from today. This will add thousands more citizens to the circle of eligibility. As part of the reform that I led in the Firearms Division, we broke a 10 year record in just six months, by approving over 116,000 gun licenses for those eligible as part of the reform. We bring the news to the residents of Modi'in, who are now eligible. Firearms save lives."
